Your Least Favorite Witch
One of the upsides of these favorite/least favorite pairs of questions is that you still have in mind the general category from one question to the next. Having looked over the witches in order to answer last week’s question, I was able to remember which one I liked the least making this week much easier for once.
As it was for Justin, in this case I don’t really dislike the character at all but I am very disappointed by the wasted potential.

In many ways, you could consider the eldest Gorgon sister as one of the main antagonists of the show. After all, the Kishin would not have had the chance to escape or regain any of his power had it not been for her. She stands atop the pack being the most powerful witch shown in the anime.
She also has a rich and colourful history. Having lived for more than 800 years, she has had the chance to be a close associate to both Death and Eibon, although we are never told why they eventually grew apart. During her time with these two, she undoubtedly had the chance to work on some very interesting projects. She is also the creator of demon weapons. As these need a witch’s soul to be crafted, there certainly must be a very intriguing story behind their discovery. In short, Arachne has no alliances. She has betrayed absolutely everyone and has survived by her strength alone. And she has done so in style.

Arachne is the prototypical femme fatale. She’s beautiful, beguiling and completely heartless. Her calm and distinguished demeanor is mirrored in her aristocratic appearance. She’s not one of those boorish villains who blindly thirst for raw power, she has power, she needs more to become the Mother of All Things. A goal she is so attached to that she even establishes herself as a mother figure to her subordinates. I know a thing or two about beautiful and cruel mothers. They’re scary.

Are you still reading? If you are, you probably realized that Arachne is an awesome antagonist. A great villain, with more background and personality than the Kishin (anime version) without even getting into her impressive powers. Maybe you’re starting to wonder whether you really understand the meaning of the word “least”. Maybe you’ve come to your sense and are now simply certain *I* don’t understand the meaning of the word “least”. Maybe I’m just rambling because I don’t know how to end this post.

See the problem with Arachne is this. We see her pulling some thread, we find out she has this awesome past and then, nothing… We don’t get any details of ole timey Arachne and friends, we don’t know what happened between them and we don’t really know how the other witches are going to react to her should she win (anime). And just as we start seeing her rev up for a promising fight – she gets glomped. I don’t know the meaning of the word glomped but my autocorrect assures me I’ve spelled it correctly.
Arachne could have been an epic, truly evil, bad guy. She could have made a drastic face turn and become a fatally morally compromised anti-hero. She could have left behind a memoirs to bring us the rich history of Soul Eater. She was a convenient plot device and nothing more. That is definitely not my favorite thing.
Suggested drink: Wicked Witch
- Every time Arachne has “spiderweb eyes” – have a drink
- Every time we hear her theme song – hum
- Every time Arachne opens her fan – have a drink
- Every time someone calls Arache mother – have a drink
- Every time Arachne drinks wine – join her
- Every time Arachne has a hair out of place – finish our drink
I haven’t read the manga, but I wonder if Arachne is portrayed differently in it. I was pretty disappointed when the anime just sorta ended. Amazing show, but it could’ve been so much better.
The ending is much much better in the manga
While I loved hating Medusa, Arachne was definitely by far my favorite villain in that show for all the reasons you mentioned. She was so sly and intimidating and lovely to look at. Such a pity they didn’t take advantage of her more in the anime. Do you happen to know if it was otherwise in the manga? I haven’t had the pleasure of reading the Soul Eater manga yet.
Well her character is expanded a little (as are most) but she remains largely underdeveloped unfortunately. Medusa is pretty amazing in the Manga
