Favorite non-nen ability
I have a feeling this may be referring to combat abilities that aren’t explicitly said to be nen related, like Killua’s super nail growth but I like the notion that someone wanted to know who the best listener in the HxH universe is or something…

I’m really trying to honor both the spirit and letter of this challenge. Although I stand by my last post, some of you may have felt cheated. Make no mistake, I am very much aware that these challenge posts are the least popular thing I do on my blog (be nice) but maybe some of you still read them? In any case, I’m going to actually try and answer this one to the best of my ability.
My **favorite** non-nen ability is Hisoka, the magician’s weird turning people into glowing flowers power. If you haven’t picked up on this yet, this particular tidbit of the HxH mythos fascinates me.

I realize that as this ability was only used once and at the very beginning of the show, it probably isn’t actually canon. (I know how different it is the manga as well). As Hisoka himself undergoes a pretty drastic transformation in both personality and temperament without any explanation, this ability seems most likely to be a “they were just trying something and decided not to go with it” situation. But since Hisoka is a pretty important part of my Hunter x Hunter experience, this very logical explanation was never very satisfying to me so I have instead spend way too much time constructing wobbly jenga logic towers to try to explain it.
I also understand that Hisoka was well aware of Nen before taking the Hunter exam and as such this could very well be a Nen ability, I mean it would make sense, but then again…
So here’s my interpretation. It’s actually an illusion! Hisoka’s nen type is the farthest from Manipulator so such an ability would be particularly difficult for him to master unless it wasn’t nen related at all. Like he may be able to release a hallucinogenic gas into the air (all pheromone like). A gas he has spent his entire childhood immunizing himself against. That would render all those present extra susceptible to suggestion that they would actually share a mass hallucination based on subtle cues given by Hisoka.
The substance is probably not that easy to get your hands on and useless in open air, so Hisoka wouldn’t be likely to use it in that many situations. It also remains a simple hallucination, no actual damage is dealt.

As for why he would use it once, in that super tense pre exam atmosphere? It’s Hisoka, for the lolz of course.
What do you guys think?
