This one is just for fun you guys! I actually know 2 sets of identical twins and 4 sets of fraternal twins. As in I still, talk to them and see them from time to time. I’ve known way more throughout the years. and since I’m not a super sociable person, that’s actually a pretty impressive percentage of the total amount of people I talk to.
So twins have never been a mystical and exotic rarity for me. Unusual, certainly but no more than people with 17 brothers and sisters (that’s a thing here) or people without siblings for that matter of fact. Now that I think about it, in my immediate friends, there’s only one other single child. Huh…
I got sidetracked. What I was going to say is that twins are super cool! And the only way super cool things get even cooler is by making them anime. Here are my current top 5 sets of anime twins!
5. The Orihara twins – Durarara
Just the fact that they are Oriharas is already something that’s bound to set them apart from the crowd, but they happen to be very cute twins as well. How can anyone resist that.
Mairu and Kururi only really make an appearance in the second season of Durarara so some fans actually missed out on them. Oh, noes! Have I mentioned that I really like Durarara? For those of you new here, it’s a running gag between me and myself. The reason I’m not putting these two higher up on my list is that they aren’t in season 1 and that they are an example of the unfortunate twincest trope. I’m not kink-shaming, I think this trope is in fact harmless but it felt a little tacked on at times.
4. The Miya twins – Haikyuu! To The Top
Like the Orihara twins, the Miyas show up much later in the series. All the way at season 4 actually although they are mentioned before. I gave these guys a bit of preferential treatment because I absolutely adored Haikyuu To The Top and I think fans were sleeping on it but also because the Miyas are identical twins.
Sure they dye their hair different colours so you can tell them apart but if one wears a hat, I dare you to figure out which one it is. It’s going to be Atsumu isn’t it? Osamu would never wear a hat…
3. Rem and Ram – Re:Zero
Now that I think of it, I don’t actually know if Rem and Ram are twins. They look like twins but how does it work for demons in the Re:Zero universe? I bet all of this was explained in detail several times and I just forgot it.
Fact is, I always just kind of assumed that Rem and Ram are twins and I think a lot of the fanbase is with me on this one. And they do refer to them specifically as sisters. I must say that compared to the other entries on this list, Rem and Ram don’t act like stereotypical twins. Like they don,t seem that close. or maybe it’s just the last season that is clouding my judgment. I do know they care about each other but for the most part, they are pretty independent.
2. The Okumura twins – Blue Exorcist
Can you call these guys fraternal twins? I mean they are definitely not identical. In fact, I sometimes forget that they are twins at all (although they clearly are brothers with how they bicker!) but on the other hand only one of them seems to have inherited anything from their father. So how does that work?
These guys are the lead characters in Blue Exorcist which is in fact quite rare. I don’t think I remember any other show with both twins in the lead. On the surface, you would think that they couldn’t be more different from each other but when push comes to shove, the family resemblance really comes through.
1. The Hitachiin twins – Ouran Highschool Host Club
For better or for worst, the Hitachiin twins are the ones that instantly popped into my mind when I started thinking about anime twins in general. I mean they are the ones that taught me the word twincest in the first place. Extra points that it’s lampooned and subverted here!
The Hitachiin are, like everyone else in Ouran, a parody of the character archetype. They go in heavy with all the usual tropes. They are identical and actually make an effort to look identical, same hair and clothes, often taking each other’s place and finishing each others’ sentences but they’re also hurt by the fact that people can’t tell them apart and feel like they lose their sense of self. Make up your mind guys! Of course, there always is that one special someone that seems to just know who is who effortlessly. Fate!

Nice list. I definitely choose The Okumura twins. It’s funny that they were born around the same time, but they each have their own personality that makes them different.
I need to rewatch DRRR. I like the sisters and their opposite personality.

I agree. They were catchy. I like how both the Intro and ending theme songs had all the characters. In the first season, I like the first ending song Trust Me.
You know, I have no idea who the twins in your eyecatch are. The most I can say is that the character-desing style looks familiar.
Good list. Twins aren’t that rare in anime, are they? I think my favourite pair of the ones you didn’t mention would be Yuuki and Yuuta from Kimi to Boku, though I have only a vague hunch of why. Maybe a rewatch is in the cards?
Off the top of my head, I remember twins in Clannad, Nyan Koi, and Yosuga no Sora. I think there are twins in Higurashi? (Never seen Higurashi). Oh, and Blood C. I’m sure there are lots I don’t remember; especially “background twins” which I’m sure exist but I can’t remember any right now.
As the natrual-born clone count increases, you get the recent quintuplet harem, as well as the Matsuno sextuplets from Osomatsu-san.
Also, I’d completely forgotton the brothers in Blue Exorcist were twins. Or maybe it never registered for me? I can miss stuff like that sometimes. Seeing them on the list was a surprise.

I knew 1 set of twins personally, 1 I just saw in the Hallways in High School a lot(Don’t even know if they were actual twins), and in 2nd Grade- I just knew 2 girls that looked like each other. I always got them mixed up- even though one was “pinker” and had a mole.
The twins that I knew “personally-” we just had a few classes together in middle/high school. I talked to one of them…….once EVER casually? I just kind of liked her more, I guess. I don’t think the other one liked me.
I’m not sure if people in our region are genetically predisposed to it. I work with a set of identical twins, I grew up with a pair of non identical ones, I have 3 friends that have had twins…
I love the twins from Blue Exorcist. I’m now going to be on the look out for twins when I watch anime

My youngest brother and i looked very alike when we were younger. He is three years younger than me and we still fight over who was in which foto from time to time. Other that i know quite a few twins back in S.A. Great post🙂

Haven’t seen any of those (watched the first episode of Re:Zero and that was it). Those Durarara girls are pretty cute, though.
I had trouble thinking of any anime twins until I checked anime planet to jog my memory, and that reminded me of a few that I liked: the Aldini twins from Food Wars, Shion and Mion (well, mostly Mion) from Higurashi, and Clare and Emily Thomas from Harukana Receive.

There’s also Chi and Freya (Chobits), and the hammer wielding twins May and Yui (Bofuri). And of course, my second favorites (after Éclair) – Ami and Mami Futami (iDolm@ster.)
my favorite twins would be Kagami and Tsukasa Hiiragi from Lucky Star and Maria and Yuria Shishido from Two Car.

I’m pretty sure Rem and Ram are twins because I feel like they covered an episode where they were talking about how they only had one horn each because they wer twins which is why they were seen as defective. Then again I could be remembering it wrong
I remember that episode. They explained that Rem actually got most of the power and she feels guilty bout it. I didn’t remember if they confirmed they were twins but it would make sense
