Favorite Character Backstory
I had to really think on this one. In a longer running anime such as Hunter x Hunter, properly established characters are an absolute must. Not to mention that backstories become almost unavoidable as time marches on and ideas wear thin.
I’m actually pretty impressed that Hisoka’s backstory was never “, officially” given. Not that this character needs a backstory really, he’s got… everything else.
The origin stories of just about every important character are hinted at but never clearly laid out in the anime. The most developed is Kurapika as his background is the driving force for all his actions. This said, it’s also horrific. If ever there was an embodiment of righteous fury, Kurapika is it and his backstory is difficult to stomach.
We know that Leorio lost a friend because of unsuitable healthcare coverage, Killua had a unique family dynamic that included large amounts of torture training and an isolated childhood, while Gon is stuck sharing DNA with Ging (the horror). Everyone else we come across either grew up in abject poverty being forced to pursue a violent but lucrative career or had some degree of abuse thrust on them. For what is more often than not a lighthearted funny show, it sure rests on some pretty horrid foundations.

Well to be fair, the show has many serious and dramatic elements but somehow keeps the tone light. I’m not sure how it does that. Magic? Nen?
I guess if I have to pick a favorite it would be Neon Nostrade, the spoiled clairvoyant brat and mob daughter, if for no other reason than her story is the least a little optimistic. I’m not sure the same can be said about her future prospects but she got away completely unscahed from an encounter with Chrollo and that already makes her much luckier than most!

Suggested drink: a Clairvoyant
- Every time Neon uses her power – take a sip
- Every time Neon is being a pest – take a sip
- Every time Neon throws a tantrum – have a snack
- Every time Neon shares the screen with Kurapika – take a sip
- Every time anyone worries about Neon – take a sip
- Every time anyone tries to predict the future – take a sip
Hunter x Hunter is one of my favs. I don’t really like the way they ended hisokas story. I need more of Hunter x Hunter though. They need to make more like right now
In the Anime or in the Manga? Hisoka is one of the best antagonists ever. His story should go on forever…
I agree. I only saw the anime. I never got to read the manga.
I also never got to see any of the movies. We’re they any good?
Ohhh well Hisoka has a huge role in the later arcs that have not been animated…yet… I can dream!
Uh oh. Now I have to go back in read the manga. Actually, I’ve been looking for a reason to step back into that universe
Dark continent is really much more fun than I thought it would be
Neon is best side girl 😀 Her tantrums are too cute!
Having a best side girl got me in so much trouble 🙁
