Spy x Family episode 33 – Yor’s Family

If nothing else, this season of Spy x Family has blessed me with some wonderful Yor gifs. And really that would be more than enough. But there are also some great episodes! Like this one. I am enjoying this arc a whole lot!

One thing I will say is that even though I had read the manga recently enough to have this part of the story fresh in my memory, it was really great to see it animated. I would go as far as to say it’s a completely different experience and one I am very glad I got to enjoy. I’m not usually a fan of drawn-out fight scenes and this entire episode was essentially one long fight scene but between the fantastic choreography and the surprising emotional weight, I found myself unable to tear my eyes from the screen. I wouldn’t have changed a thing.

One of my favourite sequences was that gag in the middle of the episode when random assassins of all sorts were confronting Yor one by one. At first, we saw a bit of the fight but very quickly it devolved to just a quick shot of the new assassin engaging Yor followed immediately by a scene of Yor’s handler taking care of the body. I honestly laughed out loud and it works so much better in animation.

But that wasn’t even the best part of this episode. And that’s saying something. It was a really great visual gag!

This entire arc has been all about giving Yor some much-needed character evolution. Now Yor is a fairly straight forward and simple girl. That’s actually part of her charm if you ask me. But she always felt a little shallow compared to Loid and Anya. What I liked about this arc and specifically this episode is that we get to see Yor evolve without actually changing at all. She is a straightforward and simple girl. And that is incredibly charming. More than that though, it has a depth all of its own.

I remember the first time I saw these events. I kept kind of hoping Loid would notice the commotion and come help her. How very normative of me. I couldn’t help it. Loid and Yor are one of my favourite anime couples of all time and I really want to see their relationship progress one way or another. Not to mention that a lifetime of tired clichés has naturally led me to expect that he’s going to save her…right!?! And the thing is, he kind of did, just not like I imagined he would.

This was better. So much better than having Loid swoop in guns blazing. This was a truer salvation. Loid gave Yor a family and that gave her purpose. And in turn, that purpose gave her all the strength she needed. Yor is a simple girl. She wants the people she cares about to be happy. So much so that she’s ready to make the world a better place for them. That’s all there is to it. And now the people she cares about include her new family so she has even more reason to fight. How perfect is that?

I’m not saying you should admire assassins or anything but you know…some of them can be kind of cool in animation…
