You know what, I’m just going to lay it all out right here. My reaction to the season 2 finale of To Your Eternity was a simple one: F it, I liked it! And now you are going to find out why!
Things sure happened fast, didn’t they? Just a week ago it seemed hopeless and it was all they could do to barely scrape by with a victory. And now? I actually had to take a minute to remember every twist and turn the battle for Renril put us through.
Essentially, the city is full of Fushi zombies now but we’re just going to let that slide. And I’m ok with it. It’s been a long season, we could use a little break. So hooray, everyone is alive again and happy and totally not eternally traumatized by everything they have just gone through.
However, Fushi doesn’t have the boy back and it’s always a little difficult to not associate him directly with that form. Not that Bon/Fushi doesn’t have a certain charm!
The last meal scene was something I particularly enjoyed. Unfortunately, my own religious knowledge is lacking so I’m not sure if this was meant as a last supper parallel or just a little aside to get in some easy exposition but I think it brought back To Your Eternity to its best. There was a lot of sentiment, a chance for different types of characters to get their say and although there were a few really sad moments, they were treated lightly and with optimism making them bitter/sweet rather than melodramatic.
We also learn that Fushi wants to essentially spread across the entire world. So if we think of Fushi as some sort of deity, which is easy to do the story is leading us to that conclusion. Then he isn’t a humanoid god-like figure, the type we see most often. He’s actually becoming the world itself. He is a planet-god. I kind of like that. I’m not sure why but I’ve always had a soft spot for the notion of sentient planets. I understand that it’s a bit of a stretch here but I think I can make it work if I squint!
I will say that I am disappointed with the lack of development the Church of Benett got. I’m not sure if that was lost in the adaptation or if the manga also just sort of sets them aside. There is so much about the design of the practitioners of the faith and the implied political power that makes the Church such a potentially interesting element in the show. I was really looking forward to them taking over the main antagonist role in season 2. But in the end, they were nothing more than a brief and shallow distraction. Barely an inconvenience really.
I was also a little let down by Kohaku but I,m not sure why. He was developed and considering the restraints of the story, I think they did a great job of creating a fully fleshed-out character out of him. I might not like him on a personal level but I think he’s actually really good on a character level. A good foil for a lot of people. But it just felt like his end was anti-climatic somehow. All that build-up just fizzled out.
It was visually arresting though. I’ll give them that. The scene was a shocker to watch.
We all know I,m a sap. It’s not like I ever tried to hide it. Mostly because it would be impossible for me to do so. I expect it comes as absolutely no shock to anyone that I teared up listening to the lives of Fushi’s friends after he was no longer reachable. All of them. They should have told us what happened Oniguma though, that feels like an oversight. All in all, they all had a chance to live a full life of their own choosing and.. I mean that’s great, right? That’s what we were trying to do! We did it! My role was rather minor but as a witness, I like to think I helped on a quantum level!
I have a special appreciation for the fact that Bon once again has a fabulous mustache and hair in his old age. A bald Bon would have been devastating!
And then this!
We know there’s a season 3. It was announced last week I think but they also added an official announcement at the end of the episode. And from what I know of the manga, the modern era is the final arc. So we are going to get the full story.
I would have been ok if the entire show ended here. I think they really came through with this episode and it provided emotional closure and satisfactory wrap-ups to everyone’s arcs. It was a good finale. But my heart sped up a bit when I saw Fushi walk up to that city! And what does it mean?
His roots are everywhere yet here he is not sensing every single person in the world. He threw away his tether and his eyes became black, Is this the boy? Did Fushi split into god planet Fushi and individual Fushi? Also, what does an immortal do in the modern world? I found that I really wanted to know how the story continues. More than I expected to.
So I guess I’ll see you guys for season 3?
