I now remeber just how harsh To Your Eternity can be. I think that because Fushi is immortal and can turn into other characters, at least physically, the writer feels ok with just massacaring everyone else. You just shouldn’t get attached to anyone.
I had been lulled into a fals sense of security but I’m on high alert now!
This episode was a bit of a speedrun through Bon’s characet development. But we always knew that Bon was a good guy. Not even deep down or anything. He was always a genuinly nice guy. He was just a bit immature. Ok, a lot immature. And possibly short sighted, wilingly so. That’s why in day to day situations he can come off as selfish or deeply insensitive. But when the chips are down and it really matters, he’ll try to do the right thing.
Putting him in a cage with Chabo, was a great way to show that.
I also like that we only hear Todo this week. She’s like a voice of reason and comfort. An agel or a ghost in her own right. It was a nice touch.
I really thought Fushi was going to get out of that iron block just brimming with wrath. All things considered, he took the situation considerably better than most would and managed to keep a cool head about it.
I was fully expecting him to go straight to the Mayor and that cleric and either scare the ish outof them or turn into a giant monster bear and smoosh them. Hoenstly, after what they put him through, it would be fairly justified.
The Man in Black remains coompletely inscrutable through all of it. What was the eye flash all about? This show is very particular about eyes, I don’t beleive it was just a little artistic flair.
It feels like it’s been a very long time since we’ve seen Fushi in his wolf form. After the boy, it use to be his favourite form. It was nostalgic to see it again.
I sort of knew it in this scene already that Bon had decided on the noble sacrifice. There’s someting about seeing him all calm and resolved that’s just ennerving. And you know, he really had some great answers for the church. Why should helping people out be a bad thing? He was already a rather likeable characetr but they really went out of their way to make him downright loveable this week.
So let’s get into some speculation.
It would be completely in keepng with To Your Eternity’s tone and nethod of dealing with characters for Bon to get executed. And I have to admit, his arc was in fact quite satisfying. His last thought being to leave the wellbeing of his beloved kingdom to his brother, honestly thinking his brother would be a great king. That’s such a perfect way to illustrate growth for this character that I feell spoiled asking for more.
And honestly, it’s a good place for Bon’s story to end. This is one of the few fictional noble sacrifices that feels thought out and justified raher than forced for dramatics. But…
On a selfish level, I like Bon. I wanted him to have a chance at a happily ever after. What’s so wrong with that. And on a more narrative level, Bon’s gift of talking wit the dead is still such a perfect fiol to Fushi’s gift of recreating the dead (and possibly reincarating them). I don’t fell like that has been explored enough.
There’s always the possibility that if Bon dies here and Fushi can take on his form, he might also inherit his gift by the same token. And then he will see himself surrounded by those he has lost. And that’s an intriguing possibility as well. I guess I’ll just have to wait one more week. They are really making these cliffhangers suspensful!
