To Your Eternity ep. 17 – Promises

Was it just me or was this episode of To Your Eternity not very…pretty. Like are we seeing the bottom of the funding bin? Did they have a rush and have to subcontract some of the animations this week? The art was just so wildly inconsistent that it actually became distracting to me.

I do have stuff to say about the events of the episode but when I think back on it my mind goes straight to those mangled character models. OK, that’s a bit dramatic. But To Your Eternity is a very dramatic show so I think it fits!

As a result, you’re getting a lot fewer screencaps this week. I did quite like Fushi’s dream world though. And it was interesting to see Gugu’s brother there. Is Gugu’s vessel creating some type of link for Fushi. Cause I’m not sure Fushi ever said more than three words to the brother, why would he dream of him at such a time?

Anywho, in the comments of last week’s episode, we speculated a bit on Hayase’s deal and I called her nutso. I think I’m sort of right but she’s also much more coherent than I figured. From what we saw, I’m guessing Hayase wants to have an immortal baby. There are some intuitive leaps there on whether Fushi actually reproduces in the same way as mammals and even if he did, would a human/Fushi offspring even be viable. But you know, only one way to find out and all that.

It’s not crazy of Hayase to want this. Not at all. From the little we have seen of the To Your Eternity universe, it seems to be very progressive in some aspects but life is still hard. I can see clear advantages to bearing a god-like child. But I also think that Hayase may be going about it in an excessive way. Some of it is the acting mind you.

But there are little things. What was the point of giving her leadership away to Tonari. She’s still in effect taking over the island. Was it to get Tonari killed or get her out of the way? Maybe but then why protect her afterwards. Also, what was the point of knocking everyone out in front of Fushi. They could have drugged them on the ship. Now it’s just going to be that much more difficult to get Fushi to cooperate. You could argue that it’s to show how much power she holds over them but that was already clear. It’s why everyone agreed to the deal in the first place. I dunno, seemed like a pretty weak move from a once renown war strategist. Unless she’s nutso!

I got my explanation about the licking!

I don’t have that much to say about this episode. I didn’t hate it and I didn’t like it either. My notes are mainly: “Yay, the owl is OK!”, then scratched out then circled again. Maybe if the art consistency wasn’t off I would have been able to dedicate more of my brain to figuring this episode out. As it stands, I’m just going to wait for next week.
