There was a problem with this episode, wasn’t there? I’m sure you all noticed. A pretty big problem all things considered. This is not how you do an ending. This was a beginning and an interesting one at that. Clover Works, I realize that you’re all excited about My Dress Up Darling 2 as well as the very likely Spy x Family 2 but you have to also make a little time for Shadows House 3. There’s plenty of material and I want to see it!
Also, not enough John. At least we saw him in the closing credits so we know he got out of the coma but whenever in doubt, add a little John.
I’m just going to jump right into it. I tried to build some type of framework for this post in my mind but it keeps on crumbling as all I want to do is talk about that cool bit and then talk about that inetersting bit so just bear with me. I appreciate it!
Anthony is great, isn’t he! They say don’t meet your heroes! All season they’ve been building up Christopher and Anthony as these kind, magnanimous and accomplished leaders. Both inspiring and comforting in their presence. But well, that was mostly Christopher, wasn’t it? For the majority of the flashback we saw, Anthony was mind controlled. Moreover, we were learning about them from the perspective of one character that considered Christopher a close friend and another who was in love with him. Not the most reliable narrators. And even if they were, a lot has happened since. And it’s the type of events that change a person.
So instead we have this Anthony. An utterly imperfect ally. A character that should hold so many answers and yet is crafted to be incredibly difficult to trust. And of course, he would be. He may have no choice but to ally with Shadows to get to his ends but he has ample reasons to hate them.
I like this Anthony, he is a much better character than the Christopher we’ve been seeing up until now. Better for me that is, not for Kate. For Kate he is… imperfect.
Oh an now Barbara made Kate a team leader and put one of the twins on her team. I’m not sure what role the Shadows actually play as team leaders, to be honest. So far we’ve only seen the teams matter for cleaning duty. But this is a brilliant move on Barbara’s part no matter how you look at it. I keep underestimating Barabara even though I should know better. Well-crafted character.
So if Barabara still suspects Kate of something, anything really, then this is a classic keep your enemies closer move. Putting Bell on the team who is traumatized by the loss of her twin, as well as an obviously jealous and ambitious Sara, is bound to keep both Emilico and Kate too busy to get into trouble elsewhere. They will have to put in all their effort just to hold the team together. And let’s face it most people wouldn’t see Emilico as leadership material.
On the other hand, if Barbara is actually making an earnest show of recognition, she might actually be trying to see if Kate could be an ally against Shadows House. As I’ve mentioned before, Barabara is potentially the character set up to suffer the most from the injustices in the House and although I said she probably hasn’t realized it, I also tend to underestimate Barabara. And if she knows just a sliver of the truth, she might be ready to rebel. As the last scene seem to insinuate. And wouldn’t an uneasy Barbara/Kate alliance be great? I personally still don’t trust Kate 100% and it makes me like that character all the more.
But you know who I do trust: Sunshine Emilico. And of course john but that’s another story. I trust Emilico and I think she is the exact foil this series needs. Optimistic, earnest, simple and kind. A complete contrast to everything in this series. And I can’t pretend that I didn’t want to stand up and cheer as she proved me and everyone else wrong by forcefully taking her place as leader of team 10.
So Clover Works, what are you waiting for? We can watch My Dress Up Darling, Spy x Family AND Shadows House!
