Dr. Stone: New World Episode 17 Review

There are so many good dads in Dr. Stone. I mean most shows don’t really feature parents at all but in Dr. Stone, whenever you see someone’s dad, they kind of rock. I do think they did Siyuz’s mom dirty, though. From the show, you would think she was an absentee parent or part of the furniture. She’s the one who brought Soyuz to safety, isn’t she? She should get a statue as well.

Oh, wouldn’t it be funny if they came across an actual statue? Like one that isn’t a petrified person. I guess these civilizations may be a bit too primitive to have the tools to make a very realistic statue but I would love to see that scene. Senku driving himself crazy cause it won’t revive.

There’s this thing that a lot of shonen shows do. Actually, a lot of action shows do it in general. Every season the bad guys have to one-up the previous antagonists. And like even if it’s technically the same bad guy, they just somehow keep getting stronger and stronger each time. And I get it, you want it to feel like there are some actual stakes. There’s no point in bringing on an obstacle that the audience already knows won’t be able to stop the heroes but it can also get out of hand pretty easily.

Tsukasa was already pretty much a Superman. However I should mention that what made the character both more menacing and way more interesting is that he was an ideologue who was honestly working to create what he believed would be a better world and quite smart. Not just pure physical strength. And he wasn’t quite beaten. It’s not obvious that Senku and the villagers would have succeeded if Tsukasa hadn’t turned out to be a noble man in the end.

When Hyoga followed him as an antagonist he had big shoes to fill and I think they did a pretty good job. Hyoga is a much more straightforward baddie. He is both an elitist and a Darwinist who wants to selectively create a new society where he is on top. But he does have a bit of nuance. The respect for people who do their job properly for example is an interesting trait. And Hyoga is almost as strong as Tsukasa who, as I said is way beyond any normal man.

But Moz…

It would have been one thing if Moz had come out victorious after a long and arduous battle but to essentially defeat him with a single blow!?! The man’s a tank! I faintly remember Hyoga having some weird limitations when it comes to combat but I must admit, I don’t remember the exact details of it. In any case, this seemed way too easy. So easy in fact that I started to wonder if Hyoga might be faking it. Maybe as a way to get away from Senku and the science team. I’m not sure.

On a different note, last week I mentioned that I wasn’t sure what good showing the islanders the Master’s statue would do. I had a whole paragraph about it. I really thought way too much on that particular subject. and of course, I just never even considered the most obvious explanation that the Master probably had a lot of good faith wracked up from his pre-statue days. Duh. I still half stand by my previous statements though. I have to imagine that only a few people would be swayed but hey, they only needed one when it comes right down to it.

One very interesting thing we do learn is that at some point, Soyuz’s dad had control of the Medusa device. So it’s been on the island for a while but how did it get there. If this is the crash site and the astronauts did not have it then who did? Also, it’s a lot smaller than I thought. I do think it grows when in use but I still figured it was about the size of a fist. I wonder what Senku and the gang are going to do with it now…
