The Masterful Cat Is Depressed Again Today – Episode 12

That was a scary episode title. I’m lucky in that I have never had a pet run away or get lost but I see the signs sometimes and I get sad for whoever is looking for their little friend. I bet it’s devastating. Granted, someone like Yukichi is more apt to taking care of himself than most cats…well some cats… but it still had me worried!

For those of you who may not know, for some reason, both cat and dog paws really do smell good. Earthy and comforting. I have absolutely no explanation for this except black magic and maybe sacrifices to satan. I think some cats do that just for fun anyway! Another thing the show gets really right, purring will knock you right out. I used to have a cat that would sleep on my tummy and softly purr. Admittedly, I have never had much issues falling asleep but the heat of a cat combined with the soft vibration and gentle purr might as well be formaldehyde.

I wonder if a cat the size of Yukichi would really look like a bear? He is rather round as well. Which makes sense. As we learned in this episode, Yukichi is entirely food-motivated. I respect that. I’m pretty close to that myself. Oh my, am I a cat too?

Between the scene of Saku being a total boss and beating down that jerk, the Sea Idols concert, and the scene of Yukichi and Saku meeting for the first time, the episode had a lot of reused sequences. However, it didn’t bother me as much as it usually does. And I think that’s because I found this episode touching. At first, I thought that when Yukichi went shopping without his wallet, this would be misinterpreted as him running away. It wasn’t but it did bring up an interesting point. What would happen if he got sick. And not only because Saku wants to keep him a secret. Just logistically, how do you get a pet that big to the vet? I have had large pets and let me tell you, it’s not easy and it was a constant concern for me. It’s a little something you don’t tend to think about if you haven’t been there yourself but once you do, you notice it and think about it whenever a similar situation comes up.

Brushing it off with the joke of bringing Yukichi to NASA actually got a laugh out of me!

For a second I thought maybe I had misunderstood the title. Or it was just a silly one and Yukichi does not in fact run away from home. But he did! back when he was a kitten! For those of you who haven’t seen the episode, no worries, it was just for a couple of minutes. Yukichi has always been very adamant that he is just in it for the free food and doesn’t really care about Saku beyond that. And none of us believe him of course. Well, now we know he actually cared from the start.

Maybe I’m getting soft in my old age… Who am I kidding, I was super soft to begin with. If I get any softer I will turn into pudding. For some reason, I found this vignette particularly touching. Something about how proud little Yukichi was about taking care of a single garbage bag or how desperate he was to get back into the apartment even though he had just told us he never wanted to go back. It hit me. I like it when animals find a place they can call home. I got a little teary-eyed…

I wonder what’s left for thee last episode? Do you think Saku’s supervisor will make a comeback? Or his niece? Maybe both? Feels like we haven’t seen them in a while.
