Play it cool, Guys continues to be one of the sliciest slice of life shows I have ever watched. As I expected, it’s not getting tons of attention but it seems that the few people that have decided to try it out are generally happy with what they see.
I’m glad to hear it. It’s a show that’s difficult to describe, at least without making it sound like the dullest anime of all time, but it has an ineffable charm. And it’s the easiest thing to watch.
This week, we see the three younger guys give a tiny bit of thought to their future. And I have to say, I found this surprisingly relatable.
I am currently at a bit of a crossroads in my career. I have put a lot of effort into it and am grappling with a huge sunk-cost fallacy when it comes to the idea of just trying out a new field altogether. But at the same time, there’s something very exciting about starting fresh. I sort of fell into my line of work. It isn’t something I wanted to do as a kid or even in Uni. It’s adjacent to a lot of things I wanted to do and I drifted into it through circumstance but I can’t say it was a passion.
Through the years I have found a lot of things to be passionate about but as time goes by, those flames have waned considerably and I am trying to figure out what I want to do next. It’s not unlike what Shuu, Shiki, and Hayate are going through now.
Shiki is the one in the best position. He actually has something he wants to do and he happens to both enjoy it and be good at it. This is extremely enviable. And I have to say, not all that common. Most people I know just sort of drifted into their professions and the few that knew exactly what they wanted from the start, rarely stick to it forever. Still, it’s refreshing to see and Shiki’s extremely positive attitude might make him the rare exception that just follows their dream to the end.
Shuu is a bit too young to give any of this future stuff any real thought. He basically just wants to overcome the immediate obstacles and get to the next fun thing. Which describes my last few years pretty well. It’s not a horrible place to be but that’s how you end up places without knowing how you got there.
Hayate is probably the closest to my personal experience. He has good grades and is diligent. He probably could have a few interesting opportunities but he just doesn’t have any passion or drive for a specific field. That’s sort of me. I like everything but I don’t feel the urge to deeply commit to anything. And you know, that’s o.k. I’m sure Hayate and I will find our thing eventually. There’s no rush. A lot of the best people I know have no clue what they want to be.
