Play It Cool, Guys – episodes 20

Last week I said that Mima was my favourite and now I get a Mima episode! I’m not sure how many people are watching Play it Cool Guys. I hope it’s a few because it is one of the most relaxing anime experiences I have had. In any case, it seems like the producers have decided to tailor the experience specifically to my tastes and I am quite happy about that. I would like to encourage more shows to go that route!

Big responsible guys being very bad with horror is a pretty common trope. I’ve seen it a lot. And it suits Mima quite well. But just because it’s expected doesn’t mean it can’t be cute. Because it was pretty cute.

By now, Play it Cool Guys has laid the cards out on the table. Since it’s a character study, what the show really has to offer is teaching us about its characters. And by now, we kind of know exactly who these characters are. Especially as the show likes to keep things very light, not to say a little shallow. So new episodes reinforce things we already knew rather than really teach us anything new.

For some reason, I like that even more. Maybe it’s the aforementioned deeply relaxing feeling I get from it. Not only does it have the lighthearted undemanding material, but now that material is also familiar just to add another level of comfort to the experience.

I will say though when Mima was thinking about a comforting experience, I really thought he would end up at the small animal café. I suppose it might not be open all night though. And Hayate is really the next best thing. Hayate’s inner life is quickly becoming the best running gag of the show.

All in all, it was a very sweet episode that I quite enjoyed for what it was. I feel like I can say that for all of them. There’s not much to say but that’s part of the charm…
