Play It Cool, Guys – episode 16

For some reason, and I really couldn’t tell you why, I particularly remeber this episode from the manga. It stood out in my head way more than most of what’s happened up until now.

This might be because I am both a huge fan of umbrellas and a notorious loser of umbrellas. Loser of Umbrellas is a great title! I guess I resonated deeply with this story. What can I say, I’m not that deep.

This is the first and only time that the show (and manga) acknowledged the BL appeal of the series. The story itself never actually dips into that cathegory, not even implicitely if you ask me, but it is the type of story that makes it easy to ship the characetrs together. Just like the legions of cute girls. This said, the series isn’t popular enough, at least in the west, to have sparked much fan material so it’s all just a bit of cheeky fun so far.

One thing that I enjoy is how well all the different personalities mesh together. You can realistically see any two characetrs from this show become friends and have something to talk about despite their different circumstances. It does help that they are all basically variations of the well-meaning dork but they have their own quirks and all.

In a lot of slice of life shows, the cast is brought together by specific circumstances. They all attend the same club or are in the same class and maybe some of them are childhood friends. But since authors will want to make the cast interesting by mixing a lot of personality archetypes together, I sometimes get these moments where I wonder why certain characters would ever hang out together in the first place. They clearly aren’t a match personality wise, they only have the one thing in common and they constantly seem to bicker.

But in Play it Cool, Guys, it makes sense. These dorks would be friends or something like friends. Mima is a lot older after all. And you can see it in something as lighthearted as forgetting an umbrella and going to buy a new one. It’s such an easy sort of interaction and watching it makes for a very easy watch. That’s a compliment by the way.

I will say, pickinmg up a shoe horn and carrying it around with you instead of an umbrella is an epic move. I have not seen that before. It’s a bit far fetche dbut I can just about imagine someone doing at some point. Especially one of those long wodden ones you’re supposed to use standing up. It’s by the door and everything…

I would totally get that bear umbrella. In fact if I find it, I wil get it!
