Honestly, I just picked up Lumine because I really like dogs. And that’s really a great way to pick a webtoon. Judging a book by its cover has never led me astray… But guys, it stars a pure white werewolf puppy! PUPPY! I’m not sure I even need to write anything else!
So welcome to my new feature! Every week, I plan to tell you guys about a webcomic I am enjoying so that maybe some of you will discover a story you like. For now, I plan to concentrate on webcomics that are posted by the author and as such completely legal to read for free over the internet.n I may eventually venture into scanslations or pay to read comics if I think something is really worth it but I wanted to give you guys some options that are easy to find and accessible to all. Since a lot of us are still spending a lot of time indoors, it’s a good time to expand our libraries a little with some new reading material.
I like a bit of traditional folklore in my stories. OK, I like a lot of it. This time around, I’m suggesting a story that plays with the traditional werewolf myth. I don’t in fact know that much about werewolves, but I was curious to learn more. This particular toon is from Finland and for some reason, I had decided that sounded like a place that would know about werewolves. Just because they have a lot of wolves… Canada also has a lot of wolves. Well, there goes that theory.
It doesn’t matter though, because I soon abandoned the academic aspirations and got lost in the story.
Lumine is actually the name of the main character who happens to be a young werewolf who finds himself with nowhere to go. That’s a very tough spot for a kid. Lumine’s world is full of dangers and he feels quite alone. Lumine is still a werewolf though and that grants him certain powers. Just by that, he manages to become a “bodyguard” for a young mage (witch) named Kody. So now Lumine has to keep himself and Kody safe, all while trying to become Kody’s bffl! The latter goal is something Kody does not seem to have any interest in whatsoever.
Lumine may not have that much in way of traditional werewolf lore but there is plenty of action and friendship instead. I really got to love both Lumine and Kody. They reminded me a bit of Gon and Killua.
Lumine is sort of a modernish fantasy, with all the magic and charm of the genre. I called it modernish because it’s urban fantasy but really does feel like a classic fairy tale, just written in modern times. For any of you that have been longing for some good old fantasy, Lumine may be for you!
