Soul Eatin Mondays – week 22

It should be noted that I’m smarter than I look. Granted there are certain houseplants that are smarter than I look…I look pretty dumb is what I’m saying bit I’m NOT! For instance, my superior brain power tells me that since there are two different Soul Eater OPs there are probably two different Soul Eater EDs. Ha – pure genius!

Your Favorite Ending

Aww fiddlesticks.. the plants still win! It seems there are four official endings. If you’ll excuse me, I’m going to be in that corner over there nursing my wounded pride. You say I can edit these before publishing them? Well fiddle…

As I rewatched these for the post, I was struck by how interesting the EDs where. I guess my expectations were pretty low or something but I found all of these rather charming and I wonder why they didn’t make a bigger impression on me.

One of the downsides of binge watching anime series is that you start to reflexively skip EDs after having seen the same one more than 3 times in a row. It’s a shame really, I realize I’ve missed out on some great art pieces. For instance, one of my very favorite EDs is for No Game No Life but I still skipped it half the time. When I realized that it had been tweaked in line with the narrative for episode 8, I honestly felt that familiar pang of fear of missing out. I went back an rewatched all the EDs. They were mostly the same.

This said, I saw Soul Eater way before that and I have a feeling I must have skipped most of these. They did look familiar on a second watch but barely.

Endings 3 and 4 feature dynamic action scenes of the entire cast in accordance to what was happening in the storyline at that point. The art style and colors are slightly tweaked, and the visual impact is interesting. Although not super memorable, these are still decent EDs.

However, the first two are better in my opinion. ED2 features Maka walking alone then running along the credits before finally meeting up with Soul. It’s a little odd and disjointed. The candy colored palette along with Maka’s unusually festive outfit don’t really match up to what we see in the show but the lighthearted depiction of two carefree friends meeting up is such a nice reprieve at the end of more emotional episodes that despite the simplicity I found this ED utterly charming.

My favorite however, is the first one. The art style which seems to have been put through a light sketch filter, is fantastic and striking. The dark colors give the impression of importance and add weight to those beautifully animated action sequences and the music, with it’s deceptively calm intro that crashes into a bass heavy up-tempo beat a minute in is the best possible choice for this show. Truly a great ED, I really should have paid more attention to it.
