I drink and watch anime

Humor Me – Webtoon Recommendation

Do you know how difficult it is for me not to add an “u” to Humor Me. Ironic since typo is essentially my mother tongue. Yet this particular Canadian British spelling is something I hold dear. I don’t know why. I do weird stuff sometimes…Just humour me…

So welcome to my new feature! Every week, I plan to tell you guys about a webcomic I am enjoying so that maybe some of you will discover a story you like. For now, I plan to concentrate on webcomics that are posted by the author and as such completely legal to read for free over the internet.n I may eventually venture into scanslations or pay to read comics if I think something is really worth it but I wanted to give you guys some options that are easy to find and accessible to all. Since a lot of us are still spending a lot of time indoors, it’s a good time to expand our libraries a little with some new reading material.

Quite by accident, I ended up watching a series of anime featuring cross-dressing girls and I discovered I had an inclination for the specific subgenre. I think subgenre may be too generous here. Let’s call it a trope.

I’m not sure why. Ok, I have a pretty good idea why. I think ladies in menswear are hot. Really hot. Always have. But beyond that, I found myself having a lot of fun with these stories. They throw out a lot of the stuffy dialogue and relationship conventions.

Oh, did you think I just went on a random tangent again? I’m the one who branded my blog this way so I can’t blame you for thinking I’m drunk. I’m not. Charlie, the main character of Humor Me is a girl who everyone thinks is a boy. But Charlie’s androgynous looks are the least of her problems. In fact, they are hardly a problem at all. First, her dad just ran off leaving her and her almost 4-year-old brother Lucian by themselves. And if she doesn’t want them to get separated, Charlie has to make sure no one notices they are without parents. Of course, Charlie still has to finish High School and get a good job to take care of them all. And just finishing High School in that snobbish elite school she got a scholarship to is a real challenge. And now, some snooty celebrity model thinks she’s some type of stalker just because of one little misunderstanding. Some type of male stalker….

Humor Me is surprisingly light despite the subject matter. Don’t get me wrong, it has some tearjerker moments but Charlie isn’t the type to get beat down. It’s basically a Slice of Life structure around a young woman trying her best to rebuild her life for her and her brother, in comical little vignettes. Technically, the story is categorized as a romance but I wouldn’t blame you for not noticing. I wouldn’t have if it wasn’t for the tag.

I think the love interest is supposed to be James. It would make the most sense. But I hope it’s Louis. There are no love triangle guys. So far, there hasn’t been a hint of any interest from anyone!

And that’s how I like my romance best. Funny and not really present! Also, Charlie is just awesome. In fact, forget those dudes, call me. I’ll take care of you and your brother!

The author also submitted a short story for the 2020 webtoon short story contest which won a prize. You can see it in the HEART anthology. It’s called the Monster Under My Bed and it made me tear up!
