It was warming up here, almost looking like spring and all, but this morning is c c cold. It’s a good thing this competition is heating up. We have 4 episodes to go in the Winter Games! and it’s still very much anyone’s victory. I’ve been trying to convince the guys to make the loser watch a fantastic show that we want to see reviewed…covering all my bases! I don’t think it’s working.
The season has been grim so far. Sanrio is clearly a thinly veiled study on the devastation violent cults can bring about on anyone unlucky enough to get involved. Grancrest is a cautionary tale on the dangers of producing an anime without a script and as for Yuru Camp delta…
After initially lulling us into a slumbering sense a security, it is pulling the camp blanket from under our unsteady feet to slowly unfold a twisted tale of bitter jealousy, fake friendships and brutal backstabbing. This is some Cohen Brothers stuff right here.
Like any good twist, it was all right under our nose all along. Rin’s hyper cautious behavior, the hallmark of someone who’s expecting to get stabbed in the back at any second after having leadva life of deceit and double Cross. High school girls that do nothing other with their free time than talk about camping. Clearly a cover for something sinister. Let’s face it, we always knew something was not quite right with the dumb one.
In a brilliant bid to stack up the tension, it seems that Rin, sensing the single white female danger emanating from Nadeshiko, poisoned her offscreen between episodes and is now not fleeing the scene of the crime as fast as possible. She is reluctant to do anything too drastic still, so this time is just a warning, merely weakening her opponent but she keeps tabs on her through her cell phone to make sure the message gets across loud and clear.
Nadeshiko though, is not to be outdone. She has been playing brain damaged the entire season to throw the suspicion of her being the ultimate mastermind off her. For now though, she seems to have been bested and decides to strategically concede some poser in order to placate Rin by serving as her volunteer informant and feeding Rin all she needs to know to stay on top of her surroundings. This debasement has got to be grating though and she takes out her frustration by forcing unpaid domestic labor and servitude on glasses, who does her best to please the boss’ family and avoid harsh punishment.
Meanwhile, the stress of the situation is clearly getting to Rin. The previous drugs and constant worry have chipped away at her psyche and she finds herself meeting Nadeshiko and a hell hound in a troubled fevered dream. We also see the toll has not been restricted to her mental state and a worrisomely emaciated Rin is briefly shown in yet another bath scene. Who will come out on top. The events of Yuru Camp will surely leave everyone scarred for life but will any of them even survive? Hot sister made a comeback, she looked a lot like glasses in this episode.
Seriously though, the episode was pretty good. The scenes of Rin alone gave me a taste of the contemplation I had been craving. The ongoing depiction of growing friendship through text messages was rather touching and a flustered Chiaki attempting to cook for Nadeshiko’s entire family made me chuckle. The bulk of the episode was more or less evenly divided between cute and food as the show continues to be a baffling mashup of camping and mukbang.
Predictions
At this point we have had 3 or 4 onsen scenes in 9 episodes and 120538947593468403 eating/food scenes. They could combine the two and have them bathe in broth and ramen. Yeah, that’s not likely but if it happens I want a cut of the profits!
Plot – We will get another recipe (and I will try to cook a vegetarian version of it!)
Character – one of the girls will take a picture of the food she is about to eat.
I might have done that food pic prediction before – I’m not sure if we can repeat predictions (as in we think it will happen again?) To be honest putting together rules for this contest is a lot harder than you may think. A huge kudos to TPAB, for devising a way to make this all work and a big thank you to Leap for diligently keeping track of everything. AstralGemini, and I would be lost without you.
