Stand Still, Stay Silent – webcomic recommendation (Countdown to Halloween)

I have been looking for a while for a new feature on the blog that would bee a little less time-intensive to put together. Since I work alone on this blog it can get a bit exhausting and this season, I’m doubling up on weekend posts so I figured it was time to finally have a “cheat day”

So welcome to my new feature! Every week, I plan to tell you guys about a webcomic I am enjoying so that maybe some of you will discover a story you like. For now, I plan to concentrate on webcomics that are posted by the author and as such completely legal to read for free over the internet.n I may eventually venture into scanslation or pay to read comics if I think something is really worth it but I wanted to give you guys some options that are easy to find and accessible to all. Since a lot of us are still spending a lot of time indoors, it’s a good time to expand our libraries a little with some new reading material.

These posts will be a bit lighter since they are simply recommendations. Unlike a review, I won’t be analyzing these comics in detail or going over the strengths and weaknesses of each. I’m simply here to share with you some stuff I like and maybe you’ll like it too.

In the spirit of Halloween, I chose to focus my first ever recommendation on one of the more grim and tense tales I am enjoying. The breathtaking Stand Still, Stay Silent!

Don’t get the wrong idea, Stand Still, Stay Silent isn’t a horror comic. I would call it fantasy but it does have a lot of tense moments. I mean just look at that title. Let me just set the stage for you. It’s about a century into the future and the world is not what it once was. An apocalyptic event has decimated humanity and the Earth is difficult to recognize. A group of explorers chart these new wilds in what was once Scandinavia. However, now it seems more like a page out of Norse mythology itself.

Although I don’t talk about it much, Norse mythology has long been a source a fascination for me. I seek out fiction based on it whenever I can.

Stand Still, Stay Silent is absolutely gorgeous. The artwork speaks to me and the choice of colours is deeply significant and beautiful. It’s written by a Swedish author who clearly knows her stuff and has been ongoing since 2013. Although physical copies are available you can still read the whole thing from the beginning on the official site: http://sssscomic.com/

If you’ve already read it, I would love to know your thoughts! If not, I hope you enjoy it!

Have a great day!

Irina

I'm much nicer than I seem, we should be friends!

  1. I’m already reading several webcomics alongside a stack of manga which I have to keep up with weekly, but not this one. Might give it a proper look-see later, but from experience with Sleepless Domain and unDivine (I admit unDivine is an odd choice for me, being a dark supernatural series where most of the characters can speak Spanish, but…eh. *shrugs*), Hiveworks’ full comic archive is free all the time (bar the Patreon advance look) and it just means I have another time sink at my disposal when I find another webcomic hosted on that site…

That looks pretty good. I’m neutral on the character designs, but the scenery is gorgeous, and given the context that’s going to be a major draw. I might check it out when I have the time.

(Have you ever read Girl Genius Adventure. Romance. Mad Science?)

Ooh, this is a nice new feature! Seriously cool, and I look forward to new posts in this series. This first one looks very cool! And I agree with the comment above, it does look a bit like a Dark Souls comic! 😀
